Today's JOTD!
The answer to the last JOTD is: Your great-great-great-great-grandfather's DAUGHTER was killed.

Today's paradox!

The Sorites' paradox

ORIGINAL VERSION:

Consider a heap of sand, with 100,000,000 grains. 100,000,000 - 1 grains of sand still forms a heap of sand, right? 99,999,999 - 1 grains of sand still forms a heap of sand, right?

If this were to go on and on, we would be forced to assume that a heap of sand can be comprised of just 1 grain of sand, or even better, 0 grains of sand. (Well...1 - 1 grains of sand still forms a heap of sand, right?)

"FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU---"(faints)

THUM & MATHEMATICS VERSION:

Consider an exam worth 100,000,000 marks. 100,000,000 marks is a very good score, right? 99,999,999 marks is a very good score, right? 99,999,998 marks is a very good score, right?

Well...what would Ms Thum say if you presented this paradox to her when you got back your results and said that 1 - 1 marks is STILL a very good score, right?

"GANA SAI AH NI! NI ZHE GE [PA! PA! PA! (broomstick on desk)]...NI GEI WO GUN CHU QU! [PA!] GUN! [PA!] GUUUUUUUUUNN! [PLONK PLONK PLONK (broomstick on head)]

CHUA BRINGS HELL & ENGLISH VERSION:

Consider a 100,000,000-word essay with 0 mistakes. 0 + 1 mistakes is very little right? 0 + 2 mistakes is still very little right?

Well, if you presented your English teacher with this paradox and said that 100,000,000 mistakes is very little?

He would say that you got all the words wrong and "wasn't that very little?" Then...[PA! PA! PA!]

  1. is that a changed version of the... (of course it isn't!)
A runner races a turtle. Since the turtle is slower, it gets a small head start. The runner starts running after a short while but although he is faster, if he travels to where the turtle was before, the turtle would have moved, and this will keep repeating, for an infinite number of times, so the runner can never catch the turtle. Apparently, in a book I read long ago, the word "now" had to be defined
My version of the Zeno's paradox is more interesting, but it is offensive (*wink wink*) so I won't say it
